Seriously... It's like 3 to 1 - could I be pregnant vs. legitimate pregnancy questions...

2007-03-20 13:53:31 · 15 answers · asked by Abbott*Lee's*Mommy 3 in Pregnancy & Parenting Pregnancy

namely the ones like "Umm... My bf and I had sex 5 minutes ago... could I be pregnant?"

... or I love the ones like
" I am 5 months late for my period and I can't fit in my clothes and I feel flutters in my stomach"

Not to be insensitive, I understand some are real concerns, but a lot of them... come on...

I'm sorry, I am a midwife and I just get godsmacked at the number of girls who aren't even overdue on their period yet who claim to have all the signs and symptoms of pregnancy - sore breasts, tiredness, frequent urination, nausea etc etc.

Even if it turns out they happen to be pregnant there is no way that these symptoms would have been a result of the pregnancy yet - the hormone levels would not be high enough - for every 5 women who report symptoms like this, odd are that 4 will NOT be pregnant.

Or girls who apparently have all the symptoms of pregnancy that are returning negative home pregnancy tests and ask what they should do. See a doctor? Visit a clinic?

And question after question about implantation bleeding! "I have spotted - is this implantation bleeding?"

People can talk themselves into just about anything.

Sometimes, with patients a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

I would love to have a quick question and answer reference section that makes the following clear:

1. PMS and early pregnancy often mimic each other. Sore breasts, headaches, irritability, bloating, crampy tummy = odds are that most likely you are getting your period, not pregnant.

2. Secondary symptoms of pregnancy such as chronic, ongoing nausea don't kick in until about 2 weeks after a missed period where the hormone levels start to get high enough to override the normal hormone levels already in the body.

3. The vast majority of women DON'T have any symptoms of early pregnancy, especially those who are not expecting to be pregnant. The first thing that makes most owmen suspect they may be pregnant is their period doesn't show up when they think it should. Hoping to be pregnant or being scared of being pregnant will only make you more aware of your body and you WILL start to associate every little tweak and twing with pregnancy.

3. Implantation bleeding only happens to a very small number of women and it is only a slight brown or pink discharge of cervical mucus streaked with blood - it is not blood spots and certainly not a blood flow - AND it can easily be mistaken for the start of a period.

4. ANY type of intimate sexual activity can result in pregnancy if the woman is fertile.

YA I TOTALY AGREE WITH YOU. I think people that ask other people Do you think i could be pregnant? should be smacked in the head sorry but if ur late to think u are how hard is it to go get a $5 test or go to the doctor. I mean come one people its another life ur talking about you should take the right steps and not just think Oh im not pregnant i just havent got my period in like how many weeks? Less try be a little smarter about it. Sorry if this is rude but think about it.

I understand that there are weird circumstances or things that are not common knowledge that people need to ask, but sometimes it seems like there are an abundance of questions and most of them are like "I had sex on a Tuesday, is it possible I could be pregnant?"

Maybe there could be a helpful list, like
You might be pregnant if:
You had sex at any time of day, any day of the week, in any position, at any point in your cycle, even if you were or are on birth control pills, or any other type of birth control, even if he pulled out or came "only a little bit" inside of you, or it was "only pre-ejaculate", and even if the test shows a negative...THERE IS A POSSIBILITY YOU COULD BE PREGNANT.

Yes, I do think that would be a good idea. Of course, they deserve a place to get some answers, but I think the majority of posters (me inlcuded) have no idea if someone else is pregnant, especially if it has only been 6 days since they had sex...

Nope--don't know of that place on here. Everyone is different though. For my first two I had help (fertility drugs) and the last one--well it was a surprise....
But no, most often it is common sense, but no place on here will have that!
Best of luck if you are!

Could I be pregnant IS a legitimate pregnancy question. You should count yourself fortunate to not be one of the many having to ask these kinds of questions and just pass them by if they don't interest you. I myself haven't posted any of the questions, but browsing through the many replies has been very helpful to me. Again, count your blessings that you are not one of the women whose pregnancy isn't so cut and dry. Sometimes it isn't quite as simple as a plus or a minus!
