Alleles are the different types of genetic material that code for a specific protein - or gene
In any one locus (position) in a chromosome, the DNA in that region is the code for a protein - a gene.
We often will give them arbitrary names
B - brown eyes
b - blue eyes
(yet another code in that locus yields green eyes)
In the ABO blood group you can have an A or a B allele, or an O
A - A antigen
B - B antigen
O - no antigens
But as we have two sets of chromosomes, that means you can be:
AA or AO -> blood group A
BB or BO -> blood group B
AB (or BA) -> blood group AB
or
OO -> blood group O
Note that if you have an O and a something else, it is the something else that takes precedence (is dominant)

In genetics, an allele (pronounced al-eel or al-e-ul) is any one of a number of viable DNA codings occupying a given locus (position) on a chromosome. Usually alleles are DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequences that code for a gene, but sometimes the term is used to refer to a non-gene sequence.

An allele is a DNA sequence that codes for a gene. In simpler terms, it is a given "form" for a gene. Two alleles for the same gene might be two alleles for blood type: A (for blood type A) and B (for blood type B). Humans receive two alleles for each gene: one from the mother and one from the father. The proteins encoded by the two alleles are similar in that they are encoded by genes at the same chromosomal locus (location). In general, these proteins will share the same function, but may vary slightly in structure.

Different types of stuff. Like brains and gunk and trash. Maybe a few dolphins, I don't know.
