I have seen people do this to a rental car and am curious as to what actually happens when they do that.

it will grind and it will possibly bend the park pawl if you put it in park when going slow, which is worse than when you put it in park at high speed.

OUCH. That is hard on the parts. Actually, all you'll hear is a loud clicking and the park dog is trying to seat itself into the locking position but can't because the wrong parts are moving and shouldn't be.

That is why a lot of rental companies won't rent a car to anyone under 25.

Mainly, it screws up the transmission, and the car doesn't even stop! Not immediately, anyway. I lost the brakes on my '69 Chevy truck and almost drove into a 7-11. I threw it in park, and it went up on the sidewalk and stopped. It made this heinous clicking noise, and a couple months later the transmission went out. My husband was pissed, but if he had replaced the brakes, I wouldn't have had to do that.

It's one of the worst things you can do to a transmission. Some people act this way, cuz it's not their car. Basically it's like sticking a steel rod into the spokes on your bike. It's not good!

Long-term abuse will tear out the park sensor. A friend threw an Eclipse into park at 65mph and we thought it tore the transmission out, but it was only the park sensor.
