This really annoys me so bad. Why on earth do they advertise perfume on the T.V? Duh! We can't smell it on the telly you know! We need to smell perfume to know if we like it or not! lol

Food adverts are different! When food looks nice and tasty, you want to eat it, but perfume doesn't look tempting at all.

Perfume is sold on image and the public's aspiration to associate themselves with those images.
What you say is true and it is kind of the same for food.
food ads sell happiness and contentedness in the form of seemingly tasty food.
If you watch all ads, they are promoting perceptions of products and more importantly, pretend lifestyles associated with their products.
When was the last time you saw an ad in the UK for a car where the passengers were miserable, the weather was raining cats and dogs and they were stuck in traffic?
They advertise it in the Alps, in the sunshine, speeding round the roads, no other cars on the road.....free as a bird. The association is. That car will make me feel free and happy and I'll enjoy driving it through the countryside blah blah blah.
It's the consumer light at the end of the day in day out dreary tunnel and it's just a lie.
Buying the car won't make you happy.
Buying the perfume won't make you a model.
Buying the new mobile phone won't make it summer all the time and mean you get to be on permanent holiday.
"Why on earth do they advertise perfume on the T.V?"
Because people get taken in by it and fall for any old bull. It works. Advertising is a huge industry.
How long before the terminal stupid start thumbs downing me for that?

It's called product awareness. If you see a famous person or a pretty model endorsing a perfume on the TV it sometimes makes you want to go into Boots and have a sniff. I must admit I did this when I saw an ad for Ange ou Demon.

To make us buy perfume.
I have to agree that it is a particular challenge for the Ad man.
But then they are up to it, being greater masters of psychology than Clinical Psychologists.
1st Ad man: What time is it Rog?
2nd Ad man: What time do you want it to be?
