My best friends are always going through something. I don't have a problem with that. The reason I'm asking this is when they do, I don't know how to comfort them. I always feel a little awkward when someone cries around me. I don't know how to console anybody. Can you give me pointers?

Sometimes my friend cries i will also feel awkward but my best way for comfort them is to leave them alone for awhile and ask them what happened after they cool down and i will think of a solution for their problem or i will made them laugh by trying all means and ways.Because i do cry too but not too often, but i laugh the most for all the time.

Being there when someone needs you is the most important thing. Let them know that you're there for them, that they can see you or call you at anytime, that they can discuss anything with you because you won't judge them. Give them a hug, hold their hand, or let them cry on your shoulder. Hear them out. Give them your opinion only if they ask for it, or really want it; otherwise, help them get to the answer themselves by asking them questions so that they'll think about what they feel, and what's important to them. And if you don't know what to say, tell them that, it's an honest answer and they'll respect you for it. Most of the time, people just want to be heard, loved, and accepted--validated as people.

Give them a little space. Let them know that you are there for them and do care. It depends on what type of problem or situation. If it's a death, tell them you understand, it's a hard thing but they will get through it and you will be there for them. Be the strong person and don't awkward. You wouldn't believe how many people come to me. My friends go through stuff daily. I send them cards, e-cards, leave encouraging messages on their voice mails and call just to say "hi" and tell them I'm still here of they need me. Don't let it get to you.

In times of need, people need someone who will hear them out and show compassion. When a friend breaks down in tears, just listen to what they have to say, hug them if they're not too upset (sometimes, when people are really angry, they don't want to be touched). If they're asking for advice and you think you may have something sensible to say, go ahead and say it. Just let your friends know that you care; that you're not indifferent to their situation. That's just about the best you can do.

How bad is the problem, a hug could help bring up anyone's spirit if they're only moderately sad. but if it's a bigger problem try talking to them and listening to what's wrong. Just being there really.

Tell them exactly that: "I wish I knew what to say in order to help you feel better, but I'm not good at this." If you are honest, they will know it and feel grateful for having you there!

Sometimes just being there is enough.

or

say something like " Know that I am here for you and if there is anything you need just ask?
Leave it at that.

depends on the problem. If it's a big one, I wouldn't say anything. A hug may do it, but it depends on your relationship with your friends.

kick em while they're down, he/she will respect you more later. It's important to show dominance especially during a weak moment. It may sound twisted, but it can be very effective.
