The primary reason was that he needed the money to finance his war in europe plus he was unable to defend the westard moving americans

napolean needed the money to finance his continueing war in europe...
this is obvious..

But he was also brash enough to believe he would someday conquere america as well..and take it back..

he planned on using islands in the atlantic..around cuba if I remember correctly as refueling stations for his ships

Plus it is hard to fight a war from multiple sides...probably best to appease america..fatten it up a bit before striking..

he didn't see america as a threat and took the easy cash
