If you have just started him on solids maybe try to wait just a few more weeks, that of course is my opinion only. The days in between you can give him what he has already had.Prunes are good for constipation,if you have not started him on them yet maybe try them next.I started with rice, then avocado then prunes for the constipation factor and they are very high in calories.

You should be starting your baby on rice . Not barley . That could be why he is constipated . I was always told to start on rice . My children are now grown . They always liked the rice ,thats what I stuck too for oatmeal .
If you give your baby rice , he can have that every day . I never skipped once I gave it to them . And they where always healthy .
And then at the noon feeding I would give him and her some baby fruit not quite a half of jar .
Make sure if your baby is on some form of Simillac or what ever kind you use ,if in deed you do use any can formula , because Iron also can cause constipation .
If that occurs you should check with your Dr. regardless, you never no , maybe more could be going on .
I'm more incline to think it is the Barley , like I said Barley will do that .

I always mixed a fruit sauce with the oatmeal otherwise oatmeal is just like a glue inside the baby's stomach. Applesauce is a good choice but you can also do peaches or apricots. Later you can reduce the amount of fruit but for now that should be the best solution to the constipation.

Give him some prunes, they clean my son out, but only half a container or you could have a serious mess on your hands. I dont know about waiting a few days to introuduce something new, i think its a dumb idea only becuase then there going to get used to that one particular food. I gave my son two new foods a day and hes not dead nor complaining.

Oh and to the girl below me, dont give him karo syrup, the sugars make their stomach upset. My grandma gave my son that ones, just a few drops and he screamed all night long. Not the best idea.

My Ped. said to wait until 6mths to give oatmeal and barley, but start with rice. Most cereals are fortified with iron, same as formula. Too much iron constipates. If you've tried any fruits or veg., you can alternate fruit or veg. with cereal.
As far as in between days, you can still give whatever you started with while you wait to start something new.

These foods may be too heavy for its system, I also started my little girl at five months because I thoughtshe needed it, I started her on advocado- making it smooth and also banana, which I mushed with a little of her milk, which I believe helps with constipation as well making sure its really ripe, then I went onto rice ceral and baby vanilla custard from out of the tin.

Its probably the barley, its a lot harder to digest than rice cereal. At only 5 months its not necessary to start feeding your baby cereal..at the 6 months is when my pediatrician recommended starting. I would simply stop feeding cereal for 3 days, and than try again with a more gentle rice cereal. GL! (P.S., a little Karo syrup in his bottle will work wonders)

I believe you are supposed to start with rice. I think rice is the easiest for baby to digest. Oatmeal may be a little heavy for baby's tummy , and that could be what's causing the constipation. Hope that helps :)

Try giving him/her less oatmeal. Alternate with rice cereal. Put more water, bananas, applesauce and apple juice into the diet. You can also give him/ her prune juice, and a little Karo syrup in the water.

The mixed grain oatmeal was hard on my sons stomach when he was that little. We still use the single grain now that hes 11months. When you feed him the oatmeal, put some fruit baby food in it to keep his poop softer. Or you can use vegetable baby food. Good luck!
