This is called contact metamorphism, and usually happens to rocks that are close to a hot magma chamber.
edit: Granite is not a metamorphic rock.

Definitely go with the "contact metamorphism" angle, it is solely attributable to heat and not pressure. By the way, granite is an igneous rock; when metamorphosed, it becomes marble.

Hi. When the temperature allows some constituents to solidify first and finally cool so all constituents do, you wind up with metamorphic rock. Granite is a good example.

DUH! Over time, rock is buried deeper and deeper into the Earth's surface. Heat and pressure morph the rock, thus forming a metamorphic rock!
