That bright star looking thing that you saw was Venus. It was very bright tonight, almost as bright as the Moon itself.

It's Venus. And I live in the UK (I could see it at sunset, several hours ago here). It will set later as it follows the sun below the horizon.

Isn't the new moon beautiful as well?

If its faintly red, then it is either Mercury, Mars, or Jupiter. If it is a VERY bright star, second only to the moon in brightness, then it is Venus.

That is Venus. :) You can see it with a telescope easily, even a telescope that is cheap that you buy at Wal-Mart.
