A trial court resolves disputes between parties (civil court) or handles prosecutions for most criminal offenses (criminal court).

Aside from pre-trial motions and other procedural issues, the role of the trial court is to determine what laws should apply to sustain a claim or criminal charge, and whether the facts adduced by evidence are sufficient to prove that claim/charge.

Hence, there are finding of law, always made by the judge, and findings of fact, which are made by the jury in a jury trial or by the judge if there is no jury (called a bench trial).
