Not only does microbiology explore illnesses caused by microbes and provide valuable information in treating and curing these resulting diseases, but we have industrial uses for microbiology such as fermentation to produce alcohol and diary microbiology to produce yogurt and ice cream. Our antibiotics are from microorganisms themselves, from bacteria and fungi, which saved countless lives in WWII when penicillin was administered to soldiers and saved their lives from massive wound infection and shock, as well as treatment of STDs that people had previously suffered through, sustained infertility and sometimes died from. Meningitis, listeria, Cholera infections, etc. etc. are all treated via antibiotics.

Your modern day medicines, biological pathways, cell functions, etc. are explored through microbiology systems using DNA cloning (not whole organisms cloning, don't confuse the two) in every aspect of science through bacterial cells as hosts for the vectors. One of the most important discoveries via microbiology was of the Taq polymerase, a DNA polymerase found in bacteria that's found in hot springs and survives extremely high temperatures, that is used in polymerase chain reactions (PCR) which allowed for the rapid amplification of targeted DNA strands. This is important because PCR is not only used in laboratories to target gene function, but its also the tool for paternity testing, forensic DNA testing, and genealogy studies.

There is much more but the list is extensive and best googled.
