it used to be so annoying when people told me that i "act white"..i think its so ignorant and stereotypical to claim that someone acts a race. its almost insulting because the people saying these things are degrading minorities by expecting them to be ignorant, speak slang and ebonics, wear bagging clothes, have no money, etc..the weirdest situation is when a "ghetto" white person accuses me of "not being myself" because im acting white... ive learned to laugh it off but i still explain why i dont like people saying that. im not going to adapt to some moronic ideal of what i should be. in my opinion, if more minorities broke away from the mold that has been put in place by the media and ideals of "white supremacy culture" (which frankly is getting older everyday), then more of us could excel in various aspects of life (i.e. lower rates of illiteracy, actually taking davantage of education, not having a billion children on welfare, etc.) what do you think?

Wow..I`ve been on Yahoo since Feb. and this is the most interesting question I have answered. I truly agree with everything you say!! You are very bright, there is no doubt you possess a sense of logic. Um..I`m not sure how this will sound..but here goes..would you agree that you are a product of your environment? ..most of the time?? K..I am a white adult who spent her informative years(10-18) as the only white family in a black community. I learned a lot of culture and have life long friends. However, sometimes I find myself saying something or doing something that is more black than white. Is this normal because it is where i grew up? and people who don`t know me think i`m acting.

that's ignorant yet that's how society defines its social settings. The extra smart you talk and the conservative outfits you place on the extra you look white and the extra ghetto slang you talk and baggie denims outfits you're seen ghetto. And yet people get disillusioned and make contact with it racisim, bigotry, lack of expertise..i do no longer see all of us attempting to alter the way black and white race is defined? wager nevertheless reflects the ghetto character theyshould.... commence showing extra intelect video clips (whilst hell freezes over) whilst the ghetto stops utilising ebonics and starts utilising "appropriate English". whilst the statitics on toddlers graduating from severe college and extremely enrolling in college options up in decrease earnings factors. until eventually at last modifications come society will stay ignorant and those statements you "act white" or you "act black will proceed.

I agree with you. I think that there are reasons for stereotypes, they aren't just totally made-up ideals. They're just very broad assumptions, made by the example set by the majority. So, yeah, things would be a lot better for minorities if they'd break out and strive to do...well, "un-Mexican" things, or "un-black" things...I know that sounds horrible, but it's true. For instance, lots of minorities are stuck with the stereotype of being criminals...maybe because 6 out of 10 inmates in jail belong to an ethnic minority. They're the only ones that can change things for the better.

I understand exactly what you mean. But really the best thing to say when anyone says you act black or white is thank you. That puts a positive spin on those words.

I've been told numerous times that I don't "act black"...probably because i'm not "ghetto"...or that I like to read, or that I choose to speak proper English. But I always wondered what "acting black" even was. I assumed it meant being rude, uneducated and prejudice. I don't and still don't understand why there is a certain way i'm supposed to act because of my race. I am African-American but i'm not accepted as one. I think people say these terms because being different is never accepted. Its like if you were a Nazi, but you thought killing the Jews was wrong. Or, if you're in a gang, and you think violence isn't the answer. I think its the same thing in cultures. If you don't act the way people expect those of your race to act, your different and thats "wrong". I think its stupid. I am proud of who I am, but I'm not proud of who I'm supposed to be.

your right.
also, look at the music the younger blacks listen to. the words are outrageous. what happened to groups like the four tops, the supremes, Aretha Franklin etc. now that was some good music. not this gangster crap. and calling their women whores etc. i refuse to have that kind of stuff in my house.
it seems that in black society now a days if you aren't part of that kind of cultural thing you are looked down on and are said to be acting white.

Wow...You sound EXACTLY like me. I'm black and i don't act like your "typical" black person. I hate it sooo much when ppl tell me i act white. Many black ppl have told me that and i find it very annoying! I try to smile and be nice about it but the next time someone tells me that im gonna go off on them. I do find it annoying that ppl think I'm suppose to be loud and "ghetto" to be like my race. Some ppl are just so ignorant, they dont know how stupid THEY sound when they say it

People have to put labels on other people to understand them and know what they are. When people don't understand other people it just drives them berserk. It's just like the house mom that just has to put a label on everything the family eats, she'd go crazy not knowing what each of the foods is.

I would tell that person that I don't want to act like a fool. It has nothing to do with being white of black. There are plenty of loosers in this world, black and white. They act like fools, dress like fools, and speak like fools. Nobody takes them seriously. They will never amount to anything. Why would you want to be like them?
I guess that I agree with you.
