I completely agree with those who said that Rap has changed ... drastically. It originated as a way of public protest - chants that then developed into freestyle - making up rhyming poetry on the spot. Unfortunately, the original message - a socio-political outcry - has turned into singing about glorifying drugs, partying and taking advantage of women.
With that, rap is music because music is defined as sounds organized with melodies etc. While it may be extremely basic and bad, it's still music.
I hope rap can go back to its original music and the creative ways like the Beastie Boys. Well, what we have is what we have .... you be the judge

My personal opinion-some rap (like all genres) is music. Some isn't. I don't define 50Cent's songs as 'music' for the same reason I don't define Celine Dion's songs as music. Some songs have a message, some don't. Sage Francis, The Roots, Outkast's early stuff, Run DMC, Mos Def- I have them mixed in my iPod with Hellogoodbye, Janis Joplin, Pantera, Damien Rice, AIC, and Eric Clapton. It's really more about preference.
