The first German immigrants came to the colonies in about 1610 into Jamestown to harvest the forests but most were killed off by Indians or disease.

Another large group came to Virginia in 1714 and another in 1717 to work what was hoped to be silver mines (see ft. Germanna). When this failed to pan out, most move close to the Blue Ridge mountains. They started their first church in about 1740.

The next big german migration was in about 1750 in Pennsylvania. There was not enough land for them so the moved to the piedmont of North Carolina.
