No one is "buried" in Grant's Tomb - President Grant and his wife are entombed there above ground in sarcophagi.

General Grant National Memorial is a mausoleum containing the bodies of Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885), an American Civil War General and the 18th President of the United States, and his wife, Julia Dent Grant (1826–1902).

A riddle relating to Grant's Tomb, popularized by Groucho Marx on his game show You Bet Your Life, is "Who is buried in Grant's Tomb?" Though the proper answer is "nobody"—Grant and his wife are entombed, not buried.

Believe it or not, there are a few different answers to this:

1. Most people say Grant.

2. Some say Grant and his wife.

3. A few people say that nobody is buried in Grant's tomb because they are entombed, not under ground.

You're kidding right?

Ulysses S. Grant (April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) - 18th President of the United States (1869–1877). Actually he isn't buried - it is a tomb. Also his wife, Julia Dent Grant (1826–1902) is entombed there.

Oh,that's him all right. The tomb was a hang-out for junkies for years, then it was cleaned up. But nobody ever tampered with the tomb's interior. Grant is probably well preserved as dead presidents go,since his coffin is marble.
