I think you've come across an interesting fact about our education system: that it's outdated. Our education system only prepares people to be employees or maybe a small business owner. Our education system is still a relic of the industrial age, which some would argue ended in 1989. You pay a lot of money into an education system and still don't have a job. Plus, our education system is fairly good at teaching knowledge, but it doesn't do a great job of teaching people how to apply their knowledge. Knowledge is NOT power. Only the application of knowledge is power. Too many people go to college because it's what they're supposed to do, but they have no real vision of what they want to do and generally use college as a half-way house between the teen years and adulthood.

The tragedy is, your friend did have a vision, but small-town America often does not have the jobs. I think your friend has three options: move to the city, commute, or work for someone else (perhaps in a field out of his training) while operating an in-home business part-time, with the intent of that becoming full-time when the revenue is generated to pay for his insurance as well. Or, he could find a home-based business that would help him make money and address his diabetes and help him get healthier at the same time.

Also, health insurance is one of the worst things to happen to this country. It shifted people's buying patterns and behaviors to where they no longer considered themselves responsible for their own health but instead shifted that responsibility to doctors and drug companies, who only get paid when we're sick or broken. (Hopefully that's not a revelation to anyone.)

We need a health ASSURANCE plan, not health insurance (which you only use when you're not healthy, for the most part).

This is not new news...usually entry-level employees of colleges fall under poverty level, sadly enough. To keep our educated from moving away does not take an educated mind. If it weren't for the uneducated, a community would not function (ie. janitors, garbage collectors, housekeepers....). The education system cannot under empasize that these workers are most viable. BUT, you still can not teach enthusiasm, loyalty, honesty, commitment, etc, in your schools. It may rub off but USUALLY these attributes come from those close to you or someone that cares and sometimes a natural drive. These days, one has the option of commuting to areas that pay more or grants for applications for small business ownership, etc. Many add/or juggle different degrees/certifiable-interests for a variety of employable solutions. Most do not stay in one occupation anymore. I struggle with the questions and answers myself -- look at my profile name. Godspeed & Godwill!!

Isn't your view kinda socialist?

Getting an education is good advice, as it increases your options. There's nothing wrong with him becoming an auto mechanic, if that's what he has to do to stay near his friends and relatives.

His education gives him the option to do additional things, to think better, even to go on Jeopardy if that's all he wants to use it for.

Start a home-based business in an area of interest to himself.

What is the point of an education if you refuse to use it?
Maybe he just hasn't used it yet...it doesn't expire or go off like outdated milk.
It's not the education that is hurting your friend.
I hope he'll find something soon...maybe a telecommuting position.

The true purpose of an education is to teach you how to teach yourself. It is never wasted.
