The US was a newborn republic and viewed the Cherokee and other Eastern tribes as a security threat to settlers moving west. The government saw the solution as moving them out of the way of further expansion. The history of the Cherokee and the other civilized tribes was marked by incredible achievements. They were at the mercy of the governmental juggernaut that was willing to do what ever it took to resolve the perceived problem that the Native Americans posed culminating with the "trail of tears" which is one of many governmental injustices that have occurred in our history.
