Congress is determining whether Gonzales violated the codes of ethics for attorneys, and/or the oath of office as AG.

The issue is not that USAttys were fired. Nobody is saying he didn't have the legal authority to do that. The issue is WHY they were fired, which may have been for unethical or improper reasons.

And if Gonzales violated the ethics of his profession, or his oath of office as AG, then those are grounds for removal from his position as AG. So, it all comes down to WHY the federal prosecutors were fired and what the political agenda was (if any).

That's what the hearings are trying to determine.

For partisan reasons, the Democratic party, now in power in the House and Senate, want to examine any possibility of impropriety in the Bush administration. The executive branch has the right to hire and/or fire attorneys in the U.S. attorneys office (not judges) for any reason, or none at all. It's much ado about nothing.
