Dear Sofresh: When Reagan was President, I thought he was partly a buffoon and partly an actor playing a role. But recently, I realized that he might be one of the best Presidents we had in the 20th century because he knew that the USA could outspend the Soviets, and basically drive them out of political power. He spent more on defense, building up our military power and technology (think Star Wars, the anti ballistic missile program), knowing that the Reds could not keep up. And finally their political power imploded and the people threw them out of office. A tip of the cap to RR. I wonder how he came up with that idea?

Reagan reignited the "cold war" because the US was so far superior to the USSR economically which had been drained by their involvement in Afghanistan. Free market ideas had infiltrated the overextended Soviet empire. Nationalism was also important as a German unification. was inevitable. Having tasted western goods and services led to the people wanting more . It wasn't guns that brought down the "Iron Curtain" and the Berlin Wall.,but due more to Levis and McDonalds.

He didn't reignite it. The Cold War never dissipated. Korea, Cuba, Indo-China, were all part of the "war by proxy cuz nukes make war REALLY BAD" scenario.

Unlike Carter, he chose to confront our totalitarianist enemies rather than surrender to them.

After the fall of East Asia, and the fall of Iran to Islamo-Fascism, the Soviets decided to move the theater of the Cold War to South and Central America. Reagan put a stop to it, and got a lot of bad press from American socialists for it.

He then continued his strategy to end the Cold War by allowing the Soviets to over-extend their inefficient economic
system (they were Marxists, you know) until they bankrupted themselves.

It was a rather brilliant ploy, and it avoided massive nuclear war.
