When you do something that you enjoy, your brain releases dopamine into your system and dopamine is a chemical that makes you feel good. Your body likes dopamine and the more the better in its case. However, this dopamine will not stay in the system forever and will vanish so the body wants more and more. Thus, your brain, subconciously or conciously, gets you to repeat the activity so you can release more dopamine and feel good.
This explanation may not be exactly 100 percent correct but this is the basis of an addiction.

- If there are interesting puzzles to solve, you'll think about them later.
- If the story is interesting enough, you might think about that later.
- If the game has a goal, you're more likely to strike to achieve that goal.
- If there's a lot to collect in the game, some of which is very easily within reach, you might want to complete the set & go after the remaining things.
- If you can do something progressive in a very short time span, you're more likely to play the game when you only have a short amount of time.
- If the game has regions that require long play with a concerted group effort, you gotta log on or you let your friends down.
- If the game has lots of customizable options with online interactivity, to make your character unique and able to hang out with other people's unique characters, a social aspect is added to the game.
- If there's an in-game economy, one might log on just to buy and sell items.
- If the game can be many different things depending on your mood, you're more likely to log on during more moods.
- The ability to compete against other players adds infinite replayability to a game, because as your opponents get better, the game gets more challenging.
- World continuity. As long as the world's rules remain as they are, you stay focused on the game
- Immersion. Lots of little touches can add great amounts to the immersiveness of a game. They're interesting. Like, in a city setting near a tavern, having a drunk NPC yell something stupid you'd expect a drunk to yell. It doesn't add to any other quality of the game, but it acts to better immerse the player in the game's world.
The game I know with the most of those things is World of Warcraft, and, sure enough, it's the most addictive game out there. Some of these things kinda conflict though, so no game can have all of them.
Oh, and by the way... These things add up to FUN. They engage the senses & the mind, holding our interest in some sort of fantasy setting. It's like the power television, movies or books can have, but with an added depth of interactivity that engages the mind.
And with Nintendo's Wii... I might have to add a new bullet point to the list...

When games are super interactive, like with Wii and DS. I have both and I personally love them. I am not totally addicted, though. Contrary to popular belief, games DO go outside and enjoy the fresh air, too! And we are NOT nerds or geeks, whatever anyone says. We have social lives, and wii, oh, pardon me, WE have a outdoor lives, too. Games are fine. Just make sure you still play outside.
