to that idiot poster above.. its called "Child SUPPORT" ... NOT.... "Child TRUST FUND". you dont put anything away, its for exactly what it says, support (living expenses).

today, child support is based upon BOTH parents incomes, thus BOTH parents contribute to the childs support. if one parent isnt working, the courts calculate and income for them (if skilled, then what they are capable of making....unskilled, min wage) adds it up, may add in day care costs, medical insurance costs, etc. and come up with a figure.

the child support can be lowered if the other parent spends more time with the child; and in comes cases eliminated if spends 1/2 the time with them.

well here in oklahoma its based on how much you make and how much he makes.350 is about average.If you can survive with out it then I'd say 300 minimum and put it toward a college fund.
