It depends on what you want to do with it. I have an accounting degree, and never worked in the field. I worked in sales for a while, purchasing for a while, and now I'm at a General Management level. You can apply the knowledge to many areas.

If you really want to go into the "accounting" aspect of a company, it is pretty dry stuff. If you want to run your own business, its essential.

No employer should "expect" any employee to know everything about the new job. The amount of training depends on what the employer wants. You get all of the knowledge and skill you need to be competent from your education. If the employer needs very specialized work done, they will show you what you need to do. If the employer does not have any unusual or complicated work, you should be well prepared by your education.

Remember, NASA does not hire astronauts. They hire pilots and highly trained specialists. NASA then trains them to be astronauts. You have the basic skills, you will find whatever else you need O J T (On The Job).

Better you know the theory. They'll train you how it's done in their company. That could mean: throwing you into a messy area to clean-up, stream-line, organize. If you know the fundamentals and are a work-horse, you'll get great experience and provide a great service.

You can expect to have a nice piece of paper to hang on the wall. Beyond that, it's entirely up to you.

Your education will only teach you how to learn, and you'll be doing that every day of your working life. Nobody knows "everything" and anyone who claims to is a fool or a liar.
