I'm interested in buying a laptop from Dell, and it appears I have two options. One has a wireless modem, the other has a wireless and a broadband one. From the footnote, it seems I could have internet anywhere with the second combination, but I'm have to buy it from Verizon or something? Can someone please explain how it all works, please?

Yes, Verizon does sell a wireless modem(PCMCIA card), although it runs at about $40 a month for the connection.

Your best bet is if you have a broadband connection at home with another computer. Get a wireless router or access point to use. That also can be verison DSL service.
Where you share your connection using the router connected to the dsl modem or cable modem.

*The wireless modem is also sold at Best Buy where they sell verizon phones. Its $$$ and i would only get it if you travel alot and want a broadband connection in the car or something.

i'm by some ability perplexed at your question to be easy. Do you or do you no longer prefer to have a dial up connection besides as broadband? in case you do, how did you have it before? little question you used the geared up in modem this is and maximum probable continues to be on your laptop? in spite of the reality that i in my opinion can not see any clarification for all and sundry subscribing to broadband this can be extra high priced in cost yet desirous to apply dial up besides this is a lot slower too??? different than in case you prefer to deliver faxes out of your laptop, wherein case you purely unplug your broadband modem quickly, (the cable of which 's long previous in the process the filter out into your telephone line) and installation the laptop's modem cable into your telephone wall socket. this form you additionally can use the dial up connection as you had until now. (purely bypass to your administration panel and set up a clean connection by using following on exhibit screen guidance).
