I am trying to transfer data from my old computers hard drive (via external enclosure connected with usb) to my new one, but when it comes down to transferring the files I get a message ‘Access denied’. I’ve tried to find a way around this but was not able to do so. Any ideas on this?
Thanks

you need to 'take ownership' of the files, see this page:

It sounds as though you have taken the old drive out and connected it via an external enclosure, then tried to access the my documents folder. Even if you have set the accounts up exactly the same the new computer will have some different details and think it's an unauthorised account. Try transferring the files by copying to a cd/dvd, or else look at the folder permissions.

You do not have adminstrative privilages, this is easy to fix.

I believe all you have to do is go into network places-> choose the network enclosure, if you only have one hard disk on your computer then it will show up as an additonal hard disk, and you should get a prompt to login. Login into your old hard disk as administrator. Then you should be able to transfer the files by draggin and dropping the folders and files into your computer.

Well is the drive shared out and does it have any kind of securioty on it? Usually when mapping you are asked for some kind of user ID and password that is known to the PC you are mapping to.

Not the best idea, but why not email the files to yourself. Or upload them to a web site then download them to the new PC.
How about using a good old fashioned floppy disk.

Try copying them over rather than moving them, then delete the originals
