I believe this is a lifetime job, where only the judge him or herself makes the decision to step down. However their are steps in place to take out a judge, if they go off the deep end !

From all of the previous answers I can only conclude that it is for as long as some of the sentences that they hand down.

Per the Constitution, for "good behavior".

This has been interpreted to mean for life, unless impeached.

Until they step down....

Federal judges hold their seats until they resign, die, are impeached and convicted, or, more controversially, removed by "scire facias".

I think they are on the bench until they retire, are impeached, or die.
