Pick some book titles and do a little research.

Amazon.com has reviews from people who've read the book. See if other people liked it.

Wikipedia.com has synopsis, though most of the time there are spoilers. See if the book is about something you're interested in.

You can also try picking a book that's on a bestseller list. It doesn't mean it's going to be a great book in the history of literature, but it will be a book that has already entertained many other readers so chances are you'll enjoy it too.

Also, you can just read the first page and see if you like it so much, you want to keep reading.
