The engine has performed just fine on conventional engine oil, stick to the brand that has proven to this point. I would not change brands now.

Start with an oil change using only 1/2 QT of synthetic oil and the balance with regular hydrocarbon oil. Next regular oil change, go to half synthetic oil and half other. After that, you can use all synthetic. With 140K miles on you Ford Escort, with 210 miles added daily, going straight to synthetic oil will cause you to have MAJOR engine problems. Synthetic oil has all uniform molecules and acts like a detergent in your oil: It will clean out your oil pan and all other places, plus soften all gaskets and seals. Doing a little at a time, helps your engine to become accustomed to that kind of oil. Once you do, the oil will extend the life of your engine.

No, an engine with that many miles is best to stay with conventional motor oil. Synthetic acts like a detergent oil and will clean out the seals and rings, this might cause oil leaking and burning.

Sure if its in your budget. Synthetic is good oil but can be pricey. If you love your car take care of it. I would also recommend a fuel injection service done by machine and use factory plugs and wires. Keep up with the basic services such as transmission, coolant and filters. Follow your service manual if you have one or ask your mechanic to print you a schedule.

synthetic is better, I saw it under a microscope once, regular oil hydrocarbon chains are irregular, the synthetic kind is regular and all even and works better.

I'd recommend it, since it's an occasional maintenace thing and you use the cars everyday and it's only a few bucks more.

Stick to to your usual oil.
Synths can leak on older, higher mileage cars!
