We call them pill bugs or sow bugs or roly polies. Most folk distinguish the ones that can roll up from the ones that can't by calling the ones that can't "sow bugs" or "wood lice."

They're isopod crustaceans -- very very distantly related to shrimp.

Where they come from? LOL. They live there. They live in the shade under fallen leaves; they come out in the morning and evening seeking decaying vegetation (you know, dead leaves, dead grass blades). They'll also eat fallen fruit, or any fruit they can get their little jaws into. If you plant strawberries, you'll have to get rid of the rolie polies.

Toads and a couple of kinds of spider will hunt them.
