Diem's was known as a puppet regime. That is, he was elected as the U.S. "suggested" and approved candidate.
LBJ had the unfortunate experience of inheriting a war he did not start at a time when he could not engineer a win. By the time the government realized they needed to take really drastic action to win, the public support for the war was declining rapidly.
I am oversimplifying, of course.
