This is a very interesting question and I think that there is not a straight answer.
Problem is, if a child grows up in a family where illegal activity is normal, the child thinks that is OK. You cannot blame the child for that. Jewish parents have Jewish children, Christian parents have Christian children, Law abiding parents have law abiding children....well, in general that is true, there will always be deviations from the norm as a result of extraneous influences.
Kids do not know right from wrong, they know the values that come from their surroundings, in general that does become knowing right from wrong, but some good children are being provided with a bad introduction to this world by the social situation of parents or guardians.
If a child is being dragged in front of the criminal justice system as early as early teens, then the whole family aught to be in the dock alongside the youngster.

They should be tried as adults when they are an adult. Children think completely differently than adults, are unalbe to fully assess consequences, are unable to fully understand thier rights under the law, and are less responsible for their actions. That is why there is a spearate justice system that doles out different punishments and operates on different rules.
If we punished and tried people based on what they might do in the future, then we'd be stupid and immoral.

it depends on the child. Some kids are VERY immature for their age, but at 14 they definitely know killing or major crimes are wrong and they know what prison is for. But now if you are talking about stupid petty type things, thats typically more of a maturity issue than the bigger things such as murder. I do agree if a child gets off easy they will just progress to something worse. Thats where the parents should come in. They need to held responsible for the childs act as well. If parents take a harder role and get more involved in their childs life then the child won't do stupid things.

i would say 16. even though at 14 most teens know right from rong they are still not mature enough to evaluate the situation currectly. They are probably faced with a lot of peer ressure and should have a second chance. At 16, you are legally able to decide to have sex, emansipate yourself from your parents or move out on your own. You also have more maturity and should have a clearer conscions and fully understand the consequnces for your actions

I agree with Bruce.
We are talking about crimes not simple negligence, and not accidents. Willfull crimes should be punished in accordance with the deeds. If a 12 year old willfully kills my dog, I want justice. If a 7 year old willfully vandalizes my car, I want justice. If a 5 year old breaks into my house and steals my laptop, I want justice.
Notice that I'm not concerned about my kid doing any of these things.
If you are concerned, deal with your kid. Do your job as a parent. If your 15 year old willfully kills someone, he/she needs to be off the streets and in jail. The parents obviously failed their job. If your teen stole something, guess what? They need to be punished.
With that said, our country needs to work on a plan for correction and a separate plan for simple incarceration. Mixing the two has not and will never work.
BTW, kids are stupid but guess whose job it is to watch out for them and keep them from commiting crimes? Yup, the parents. Parents need to be held accountable for their kid's actions.

I've seen some pretty vicious and obnoxious two year olds that have sent their parents into near nervous breakdowns. These infants may just be ready for some 'time out'.

18. Anyone who who is expected to act like an adult and accept punishment as an adult should be allowed to vote for the people who make these kinds of laws.

They should be tried as adults ALWAYS when it comes to anything!!!! The reason they do what they do is because they know they will only get a slap on the wrist!!!! You are right, they DEFINETELY know right from wrong and they should be held accountable just like the rest of us!!!!!NO EXCUSES!!!!!!!!
