my period started a few days ago (a little off schedule but it's always been that way). but the thing is... it was sort of brownish colored at first, but then it went back to the normal blood red. but now... it's BLACK. this isn't usual for me. is this normal? or is something more going on?

Not sure if this answers your question since everyone is different, but back when I was off birth control and had "natural" periods I would experience heavy, bright red that diminished to black, then brown as it faded. So...it was normal for me, but if it's a completely different change and your periods have ALWAYS been exactly the same then it wouldn't hurt to give a quick call to the doc.

Brownish colored blood is just old blood. The black colored looking thing could just be a clot and some clotting is normal for some women during their period.

But to be on the safe side I would recommend checking with your dr.
