It'd probably be easier and cheaper to open a restaurant in Florida than California. California is a more expensive state to operate in and has more regulations.

A degree in finance might get you a job in either state, probably in banking or real estate. In real estate you might be able to become a title officer working in escrow. In banking, possibly a loans officer.

I would ask a counselor at the college what openings there are for a degree in finance. To move onto anything higher in business, you'd probably need an MBA. Of course, if it's your dream to own a restaurant, you should consider a degree in restaurant management and hospitality. Many colleges offer that degree and some community colleges do, too. Run it by a counselor. Talk to some people who have the job or business you'd like to have and ask them what their background was to get where they are. Very few people will refuse to talk about themselves :-) Good luck.

Actually I can answer part of your question from an experience. My husband has an MBA and a PhD. He was gainfully employed within the state of Florida until his bank merged with another company and he was cut lose. You would think with his education and experience he would have not problem finding a job . . . wrong. Most of the companies in Florida are small businesses - having fewer than 100 employees and have low level service oriented jobs which definitely do not require higher education. When my husband started looking for work the offers came in not from Florida but from the West coast and the Northeast. If you need to work California is the better bet. Work for a few years - save and invest and then move to Florida. The only way you can clear over $150,000/year in Florida is to own a small business.
