When I was a child I went to the Y and got as far as fish and
then quit so I wouldn't have to dive backwards .My father used
to throw me in the water and I would yell and cry then go over to
ask him to do this again.LOL
What are your good memories on this?

lilshrtc, Its a excellent idea to learn how
to swim to save not only your own life but if you had children around you and
needed to save them. A lot of pools and
ponds are tempting to the untrained little tots.

I had my first swimming lesson when I was 8... I can still remember sitting at the edge of the pool, waiting for the teachers to divide us up into classes. They went down the line and asked for our ages. "Four, five, five, six, five, five, four..." I sat there and listened until it came to me. "Eight and a half," I answered way too honestly... So I was the oldest in the class and undoubtedly the worst swimmer... by the end of the two weeks, I still couldn't swim.

Next summer, my friend, my brother, and I got a private teacher. Since I was the oldest of the three, I decided I had to be braver. The private teacher was awesome, and I learned how to swim.

I always enjoyed jumping off the diving board... my bro and I became obsessed until we almost drowned after jumping off so many times and not having the energy to swim back.

I'm 14 now, and I still cannot dive. I can swim... not very fast, but I could swim to save my life, but I cannot dive. I still like jumping off diving boards and the side of pools, though.

I lived in a condo which had a pool and all the kids would swim there....we took that pool over....I actually learned how to swim in Barbados while on vacation with my parents. I was 5 years old and met some friends a little older who knew how to swim.. And yes I can dive....wanted to do it professionally but I am allergic to chlorine..

LOL!!!!Pretty much the same as you. At the YMCA. But it wasn't my dad. My dad still can't swim and he is 90 years old. A bunch of my friends used to throw me onto the pool. Some how I'd make it to the edge and they would grab me and throw me in again. HA!!!! It worked. Took me forever to learn to dive. I don't know how many belly (ouch) flops I did before I got it right. But...............I'm a swimmer now.

Saving another boys life from drowning canoeing during a school trip...

And saved an individual from the bottom of a pool at a hotel during one of our softball tournaments a few years back....

Never got as much as a thank-you ...but I'd do it again anytime !!

My dad taught me how to swim. I was about 5 years old i think. I got really confident one time and i went to the deep area without my floaties, i almost drowned because i couldnt reack the floor. But my dad saved me and taught my how to swim extremely properly, instead of things like doggy swim and such. y fave mermories, were when we were at the beach and my dad used to take me out to the way deep (with my floaties) and throw me off his shoulders and stuff. I got scared too but asked him to do it again.Lol.

My dad did. He took me out to the center of the lake and threw me in. The hard part was trying to get the handcuffs and heavy chains off before I hit the bottom of the lake.

Growing up, we lived near the sea...yup seas (as in open waters, not the beach)...so I've always been a water baby.

Can I dive? I guess I can...but not the way the Olympians do it.
