In my opinion, the intent of the end result would be the deciding factor. First, assassinations are targeted to specific individuals. For example, during war time, Marine Corps snipers are trained to target officers and political leaders for shooting, as opposed to rank and file soldiers. Second, there is a specific objective sought by the shooter/government/ authorizing agent in the removal of a specific individual. For example, a drug deal may order the killing of a rival dealer to gain the person's territory; or it could be in retribution for some offense committed by the assassinee against the shooter. Finally, assassinations are usually well planned, thought -out events.

Murder on the other hand is typically a crime of opportunity, panic, or passion. For example, the black man in Texas who was attacked by a group of white men, tied to the back of a pick-up track and drug down a dirt road until his body had been dismembered and ripped to shreds was a murder. That victim was not picked because of who he was as an individual, but because he was black--in fact, that night, any black person would have done just fine, according to the statements made by the assailants. Hopefully this will help you.

Assassination is done by a paid professional hit man or a military or mercenary sniper and usually involves the murder of a famous or infamous individual, most often for political purposes or because of a difference in political ideology. The assassin usually does not know the person he kills personally. The hit is usually arranged through a third party to assure anonymity.

You have to be killed for a political reason and you have to be a political leader of some sort to be assassinated. I think Shakespeare invented the word assassinate. I hope that helps, God bless.
