i love mine... it's the best thing ever... i had real problems with other forms of contraceptive. my three lovely kids are all the result of contraceptive failure - one with the pill, one with a diaphragm and spermicide, and one with a condom - i'm allergic to latex, and the pill really doesn't suit me at all.

i tried a *normal* iud first, but had really heavy periods with it, so i changed to a mirena about 7 years ago and am on my second now.
for me, the insertion is quite painful - i have to get morphine tablets and a local anaesthetic before they put it in - but from then on, i have no problems. i'm completely unaware that it's there. i had a fair bit of spotting for the a couple of months when i first had it, but i've had very infrequent, very light periods ever since. and, best of all, i've not got pregnant again!
the only down side for me is that i can get pmt symptoms without getting the *relief* of having a period, and that i never know when i am going to bleed, they are so irregular.

i've also had a partner that could feel the strings sometimes when we were having sex! apparently it was a tad sore at times, and we had to avoid one particular position :)

Mirena coil can be the miracle for some women and a nightmare for the rest, each individual is different, my doctor wouldnt fit me with one to stop very heavy periods, where i was becoming so anemic, even my ferritin levels were dropping so he performed a procedure called a MEA and not had or will ever have any more periods. Best decision i have ever made.

Hi, i had a mirena coil for about 6months, but i found it to be very uncomfortable especially in the beginning. I had heavy bleeding almost constantly for the first 3months but then nothing. I think they are a good long term solution, but not for everyone. Every womans body reacts differently to these things as all the other comments reflect. disscuss it with ur dr!

I just had my IUD put in last week. I've been experiencing some uncomfortability with it, but I have been told that it goes away. What got me interested in it is my neighbor had one put in and she said that at first she seriosly thought about having it removed but after giving it some time she was able to get used to it and it's no problem for her so I'm going with the same thing.

Having it in isn't horrible, but I do know it's there and can sort of feel it I guess when I shift a certain way and I think it's a matter of just getting used to it.

But as birth control goes, I think it depends on the person as to the best option but it doesn't hurt to try it.

I first had a coil about ten years ago as an emergency contraception and i have not looked back. Im on my second one now. admittedly the first one was slightly more uncomfortable, and i would get a horrible discharge before I was supposed to come on, but I would bleed minimally. Now I have an iud it has been bliss, 'no periods'!!

I have and love it. Once you get over the spotting for the first few months it is great. I don't have painful heavy periods as an added bonus to the birth control that you don't have to think about.

I had one fitted in August, my body expelled it. Had another fitted and have just had to go for ultrasound to see if it is in the correct place and it is being expelled again. Some women's body's just won't accept a foreign object. Yes the majority of women have no problem, but be aware of the possibility of a problem.
