If it were indeed presented for political reasons; during this administration it should be renamed to the "Tyrant's Trophy".

It would still be called the president's Trophy. As you can see, a canadian team won it in: 1986-1989 (Edmonton Oilers in 86 and 87, Calgary in 88 and 89) and in 03 (Ottawa). I think it's safe to say that if the trophy changed names for something like that, the NHL would have that noted somewhere on it's website.

It isn't called the presidents trophy after the president of the U.S. I couldn't find any literature to back this up but to me I think it is obvious that it is named for one or all former NHL presidents.
You see, Bettman is the first commissioner, before him they were called presidents. I think getting rid of things like the Campbell conference (former president Clarence Campbell), it was a way to keep something in their honor. Once again, just a guess but you don't honestly think it was named after a U.S president do you?

It's the President's trophy but it doesn't refer to the US president.
