I am having a tough time finding the qualities of an MVP. Should it not be the best and talented player in the entire league who people pay to see put on a spectacular show. Who if I may add, can take over games when everyone tends to fade away from the scene. I would like to hear from you all? In this case, I am referring to the NBA MVP.

- An extremely talented player
- Entertaining to watch
- Delivers every time in the clutch
- Demands a double or a triple team almost every time he touches the ball about 30 feet from the basket and hence passes it out to open teammates or teammates in position to make the extra pass for the basket. Its not his fault when teammates don't deliver when he makes situations easy for them to score or make plays on.
- Plays good one on one defense. Team defense is also important but its not his fault if he get caught in a screen and roll situation where his teammates have to help out too...thats what you do in screen and roll, one man cannot guard two players.
- Makes supporting cast better players. Players having career numbers this year (Hint: Luke walton, lamar odom, andrew bynum, mo evans, smush parker)
- Had a handful of over the top, unthinkable, sensational performances to highlight the season (Hint : 115 pts combined in consecutive wins against 2 of the top 10 defensive teams in the NBA)
- Helped beating elite teams (Suns, spurs, mavs, rockets, jazz) knowing that the MVP and his team have a chance of facing them in the playoffs and sending a message to these elite teams record wise, that they are beatable by the MVP and his team.
- Is the anchor, leader of the team and motivates and pushes his team.

The only person who fits these characteristics...Kobe Bryant

Couple different qualifications for MVP. 1 he should be on a winning team.
2. Without this player the team would not be winning as many games (go to player)
3. Has the stats to back the player up (assits, rebounds, points etc.
4. Should lead the league or end in the top % in most categories
5. Where 2 people are totally equal (Dirk and Nash at this moment) whos team has a better record.

No, MVP is most valuable player, of course they must be good... but what separates a headliner from a true MVP is someone who adds spirit to his team, and despite his talent really adds to the quality of the team just by his presence. Kobe Bryant is an emotional icon for his team, if he plays well... usually his team does well... That is what constitutes an MVP... However a few 60+ point games really helps, as well as consistent health not limiting their appearance on the court. My MVP: Kobe Bryant.

anyone but what steve nash showed us this past year. he used flashy passing and assists to win over America. but it was an illusion.

In sports, a Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is an honor typically bestowed upon the best performing player or players on a specific team, in an entire league, or for a particular contest or series of contests. Initially used in professional sports, the term is now also commonly used in amateur sports, as well as in other completely unrelated fields of endeavor such as business and music awards. A similar award in some sports, such as soccer, is man of the match.

First and for most... pure and simple stats.
% of made shots.
Assists
Rebounds
steals

The secondary stat that usually comes into play is emotion. If the player for possible MVP creates an atmosphere around him so that when he/she plays, the others on their team play better. One thing Michael Jordan was great at was involving his teammates and getting them pumped up. Because he played better, everyone else on the team play better.

Someone who is a team leader and can make there team win, hence the reason nash and nowitzki are at the top of the running because they have the winningest teams.

For me an MVP wins games and makes his team better, while unselfish games and campionship contender teams give them votes.
