we have sugar gliders who's nails grow VERY fast as these are tree dwelling animals that need good nails all the time. For them we use what's known as a "sandy wheel". It's simply a specially fitted plastic with sandpaper insert that goes into thier excersise wheel and their nails get sanded down as they run on it. It is VERY important not to over use this sandpaper wheel as it is hard on their little pads on their paws. If you go this route try it overnight at most and check their paws/claws first thing in the morning. For our sugar gliders we have found that two nights a week seems to keep the nails about right and never hurts thier pads.

~ wrap hammie in towel
~ have a helper hold the hamster "bundle" gently
~ gently pull out just one paw, while keeping the rest of the hamster wrapped up
~ trim the nails from just that paw
~ repeat the next day
Make sure when you trim the nails you don't trim too much off. There's a blood vessel in the nails (called the "quick") that will bleed and be very painful if you nick it. This is generally the pink-colored part of the nail in hammies with tan toenails.

NEVER!!!! I own millions of dwarf hamsters. do not cut there nails they will absolutly not sit still for it to be done and you could end up cutting their paw and injure them. Their nails are not meant to be cut. They will eventually just naturally break on their own when they are walking. Their nails do not need to be cut in the wild so they dont need to be cut in captivation.

no you dont have to. if you have the wooden sticks hey use to chew on that will keep their teeth and nails trim. they will always be a little sharp, so watch out but you dont have to trim them

I don't think you are suppose to. I owned a hamster a few years ago and he never needed it. I own a guinea pig and he does need it, but that's because it's a bigger animal.
