Aside from the obvious revenue generated from ticket and jersey sales, how do NBA teams afford to pay not only its players, but also its coaching staff, millions of dollars in cash on a yearly basis? I am aware that the team owners are the ones providing the paychecks, but at the same time, their teams must also be a profitable business in order for them to continue running the teams. So all in all, how do the teams make their money?

Advertisers pay a fortune for you to see their company name on the sideline of the court. Multiply that by number of games played and how many advertisers there are and you get a hefty sum. Advertising on television during the game also helps.

Further, all items with the team logo technically are licensed, therefore, the team gets a chunk of change for each bottle-opener, each baseball cap, each jacket with the team logo.

Add on the cost of the box seats, the concessions, the programs, the souveniers, the parking, not to mention the regular ticketed seats, and you have your multi-millions and millions that it takes to pay these guys.

One big money maker that you have not mentioned is the amount of money that TV pays to brodcast games. TNT, ESPN, NBC are pay an arm and a leg to say that they are the home of the Finals. Everytime a basketball sells that is offically licensed by NBA, the NBA makes money. Sportscenter abilty to cover games that they did not have actual game coverage of, money. Everything that has the word NBA on it ( check at Wal Mart or other retailers), money. These different types of income is major dollars and cents in American. Now think of how much money is made internationally.

Good answer darin but it's true, those european teams have money, we're just not as familiar with those teams as we are with the american teams. I just recently started to familiarize myself with them. If I was a lower tier player and someone wanted to throw big bucks at me, I would certainly take it.

Concessions, money generated from team memorobilia, sponsors, TV Rights and other small things that eventually add up. Generally, the owners fund the bulk of the money.

Also, concessions have to be enormous. Corporate sponsors as well as naming rights for the stadium or being the "official" something liek official airline all bring in huge amounts of money.
