The Roman Empire in its twilight years. Overexpanded, powerhungry, and corrupt. And a barbarian invasion is getting ready to knock it all down.

possibly Athens - but not for the democratic aspect... actually no wait... Sparta is more accurate for the USA government.

You elect a President who has the power to veto congress and take actions on behave of the USA without congressional approval - sounds like a King.

Spartans elected their Kings (they had two at any one time). So the USA more closely resembles the Spartan system in that it elects a Chief of State who is the equivilient of a King.
