BERLIN - Berlin Zoo's abandoned polar bear cub Knut looks cute, cuddly and has become a front-page media darling, but an animal rights activist insists it was wrong to intervene and save the cub.

"Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws," animal rights activist Frank Albrecht was quoted as saying by the mass-circulation Bild daily, which has featured regular photo spreads tracking fuzzy Knut's frolicking.

"The zoo must kill the bear."

When Knut — or "Cute Knut," as the 19 pound bear has become known — was born last December, his mother ignored him and his brother, who later died. Zoo officials intervened, choosing to raise the cub themselves.

Now that is sick! This is a zoo animal, raised and fed by humans. I can't believe ANY animal lover would just condemn an animal to death just because a zoo raised bear didn't know how to take care of their young.

I can understand this situation in the wild, where only the strongest survive, but this is a ZOO.

Guess my dear old grandad was right, "Common sense isn't all that common".

Of course it should be saved. With the polar ice cap melting at an alarming rate we will be lucky to have polar bears anywhere even in captivity. Mothers will often reject cubs for no apparent
reason. That does not mean that we should follow suit and just let a living, beautiful creature die needlessly. Shame on those stupid activists.

if the bear was to be released into the wild then it would be a problem because if the mother rejected its cub then it may have physical problems or be sick but in captivity were survival of the fittest isnt as important i dont see the need to kill it

absolutely not!!!!Humans introduced into an alternative toNature have to accept the responsibility for ther animals well-being permanently. Nature is red of claw and tooth is a well known expression. only humans can change nature to a more benevelont state.

I don't think a zoo is a good environment for it, but It should live.
I'd suggest moving it to a wildlife refuge instead though.

Species appropriate eh? PC gone completely mad. this Albrecht probably would let a premature baby die for want of a 'species appropriate' humidicrib.
