Tread carefully here...maybe it's not broken, but maybe it is.

We obviously are extremely reliant on our hands. Improperly healed/aligned bones in our hands can lead to lots of frustration later in life.

To throw out "a doctor won't help" often isn't accurate.

If there isn't improvement soon, consider advice from someone trained to actually look at a picture of the bones, not from someone sitting at a computer (myself included).

The ice is a good initial idea as it can help the swelling and bruising. After that then bandage the finger...not too tightly but nice and snug and it can be put into a sling to keep it elevated for a day or so. If you think it MAY be broken, then the finger can be bandaged to the one next to it.

If it looks distorted and obviously broken, she must go to the hospital as it may need resetting.

As soon as the pain settles, no bandage as the finger needs some gentle movement to keep it mobile.

Over the counter pain killers if needed too.

A doctor isn't going to help her.
Cooling with ice is good, if it is wrapped in a cloth, and held on for 15 mins and off for 15 mins, keep repeating.
Probably the best thing is to put two popsicle sticks together, and lay them along the finger on the palm side.
Wrap the sticks and finger with gauze to splint the finger and keep it from further damage for a week. Leave the finger tip free and squeeze the fingertip and nail and see that blood flow immediately comes back to nail bed, that will tell you that the bandage is not too tight and restricting blood flow.

And don't worry about the parents .......STUFF HAPPENS.

Without going to a doctor, you can not be sure if it is broken. I have had similar things happen and it was just a bruised muscle or tendon.
