I turn it on and the startup doesn't even come up. Sometimes it does but even then it turns off automatically or freezes up during startup or while I'm working on something. What could be the problem???

reformat the pc first; most of time freeze or auto shutdown because too many junks in ur system. yep, there are alot of software can delete all those junks but takes alot of time, best way and easiest way to do is to reformat the pc. don't forget backup ur system.

When did this start?
Have you recently installed something?
Sounds like your computer is receiving conflicting commands.
Can you do a system restore? Perhaps if you go back a bit you may hit the last time it worked.
First try diagnosing the problem in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode:
Turn your PC on or Restart. As soon as you see the black and white screen, press and hold the F8 key. Continue holding until you see a black and white menu. Safe Mode is F3 or F5.
Windows will not be loaded but you can get into the Control Panel. See if you can find a device with a problem.
To open Device Manager, click Start,
point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Hardware tab,
click Device Manager.
Right-cl an item to be checked and select Properties.
If it is working properly, carefully continue down the list.
If you don't find a problem here, in the Control Panel, check Power Options.
If no problem here either, Shutdown.
Unless someone here has a better answer, I guess you will have to format the hard disk and reinstall everything. Note: Before you format, return to Safe Mode and see if you can backup or copy any files you want to a flashdrive or floppy.

If it's a PC, try starting the computer up in "SafeMode" look it up online but I think it's f8. press f8 about three times a second as your PC powers up and it should take you to a screen that opts for a startup mode. You should see about 5 options, one being SafeMode. Enter that stage and see if it goes all the way through. If it does, you might have modified your system root files or downloaded a file with a malicious script that did this. If the PC doesn't allow you to enter SafeMode, then just like the answer above, it might be a power supply problem. Always make sure your computer has proper ventilation. Temperatures can reach 160 degrees F or more inside. One more thing, if you are allowed to go into safemode, I would burn your pictures and files onto a cd for safekeeping.

before you reformat or anything drastic like that take the side off your pc and look at your fan screens make sure air is able to flow freely.the most common reason for freeze and automatic shut down is over heating.if there is an overly amount of dust build up then get a can of canned air and blow them out...make sure you unplug power supply before you open your pc and touch something metal to discharge any static electricity you may have in your body...good luck

checck out for some indications. turn your pc on and check wheather it is booting or not. if it is booting and running normally for sometime and then turning off then it could be a heating problem of your processor. if the system does not boot then it might be a ram or motherboard problem, check wheather you smps is ok or not. it if ok then check your processor.it it works it will obviously turrned hot, if not then the processor has gone. other wise it would be a mottherboard problem. if it is booting then ttry to boot it in safe mode or last known good configguration, if it is due to a driver problem then it will works or if it is for a system or os problem then it wil not.

if your pc is running windows 95 all i can say is wow it still works.... you wont be able to do a system restore cos that feature didnt appear until windows ME... your pc is old so im guessing the parts are wearing out... the best optoin i would suggest is buying a new pc... as most parts available now wouldnt work on a system so old.
