I am currently doing my masters in information security. it just occured to me that it might be good to do something in networking as it can help break ground into the networking industry.
I have limited experience in the field. but would love to take up the challenge... I would like to work on a project that can help me prepare for CCNA exams...
Please your suggestions will be absolutely welcome.. thanks

if you are talking networking then i would assume that you will be taking it from the basics upwards.
a basic network is as simple as connecting one pc to another with a single cable.
the next step would be linking pc's 'the old way' using a T-connector on each pc and a coax cable from one to the next, first and last in the line would have an end cap.
after that, you will be looking at hubs and switches where all pc's in the network will link to the hub with individual cables (wired network) and the hub will go to the server....this way they can share files, printers, internet.
this is where security comes more to the fore.
you may want to limit access to certain programmes/files for some users but grant them for others.
the internet provides another challenge as you need to keep out the hackers, a decent firewall will suffice usually.
virus's are another problem, bad enough to get them on one pc but for them to spread across the network is totally unwanted so a good anti virus prog is a must.
then, you move onto wireless networks, no cables, range limited and an even bigger security risk due to the fact that theoretcally, anyone within range will have access to your network, the good thin gis that range is quite limited and security is a good deal stronger.
the 3 'main' types of network will be home, small/medium office then large corporate networks that will be linked across country (or maybe countries)
so, i hope that gives you plenty to think about for now, good luck.
