Through formal and informal assessment... observation... talking with them... getting to know each students strenghts and then building on them. Each and every student has something special to contribute to the class... it's the teacher's job to find that strength and use it to build up their "weaknesses." Every child has the potential to do something great with their lives... as a teacher, if you can get them to see their potential, you have set them on the right path!

I would never have the audacity to think I could determine any student's potential.

Yet, I can expect all of my students to demonstrate Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) a common term in the State of Florida and others.

A teacher can expect all students to grow one year's growth as determined by the state standardized test--in Florida the FCAT.

If this what is meant by "determining potential", then all students have potential.

Good Luck....

You get to know them, and always realise that potential is nothing without the determination and willpower to do something with it.
