My girlfriend says to me you must have been shot in the back in a former life , no I want to really know what causes a birthmark.

Hm. Let's put it this way... moles, birth marks, port wine stains, and the like are all generally thought to be naevi, which is what a doctor calls a tumor when he doesn't want to freak you out.

And there's no real reason to be freaked out most of the time... most such tumors are completely benign, and ones that appear on your skin are fairly easy to monitor for unusual activity and lop off before they cause too much trouble. So don't panic, unless it starts doing something weird.

Just as with any other kind of cancer, it may run in families, be stimulated by any of the huge variety of things that cause mutations and so on. That moles are not uncommon at all is just another proof that mutation really occurs with fair frequency. The size of your mole may suggest how early in development such a mutation may have occurred.

There is, of course, no scientific evidence to suggest it has to do with being shot in a past life. ( :

the cause of birthmark is unknown, but may include cellular damage due to radiation or chemicals. Some types seem to run in families.
