Make sure you listen to the song enough time to understand the guitar part. If you don't know what the artist is doing to make it sound that way, you aren't going to be able to duplicate it. Once you can hear the artist's part, take it one section at a time. If you screw up the first section, don't just keep playing it wrong. Stop and listen to the 1st part again until you get it right. That is the only way you are going to be able to play the entire song right.

First of all, (this is what i do when i am first learning a song) you should listen to the song afew times (3 or 4 times). Then, play with the song(make sure you either have the chords in front of you or have them memorized VVVVERY well. otherwise, you might concentrate too much on your chords and not be able to figure out the pattern.). Usually if you try to play with the song you can pick out the strum pattern and beat. After you have the pattern down while the song is playing, pay close attention to what you are doing. Do not play the song and practice the pattern you have been doing.
That, or go to classes or talk to somone who has played and knows most of the patterns.
PS some songs, though, do have irregular strum patterns and you will probably have to talk to someone who can teach it to you.
PPS before you try learning the patternsby listening to the song and playing, learn the basic strum patterns
examples:(normal) pluck, down, up, pluck, down, up
(waltz) down, up, down, up down
(waltz continued) up, down, up, down
etc.

slow down the strumming to a crawl....when you practice, increase the speed a little bit at a time (each day) until you're doing it the way it's supposed to be
