at a restaurant, when we're dining alone, my husband has this irritating habit of wanting to sit next to me. This isn't something new, when we were younger I thought it was cute and romantic, but after 20 years of marriage it just grates on my nerves when he does this, especially having told him for the past 10 years how it annoys me. I want to look acroos at the person I'm dining with, not get a neck cramp from having to turn my head and talk. Would you rather have someone sit across from you or next to you when seated in a booth and it's just two of you?

Across because as you said, it would be easier to talk to them.

across as its so much easier to talk to the person you are dining with...i find it annoying when my boyf. sits next to me and i told him and so he agrees to sit across but just try telling your husband that it wont be tolerated anymore or let him sit first then you sit across...or you could sit on the end of the booth and not scoot over....i hope you find something that works out for the both of you. if he isnt listening to you about something that obviously annoys you he isn't showing that he cares enough. a simple of way of showing you care is listening to your partner

Across. If there was anyone else, then next to you, but just you two, you sit across from each other.
Gives you more room and makes conversation easier. . .

well, i thought about it... and i think that after 20 years of marriage you can do several things about it... pick one of these:
get used to it
crawl under the booth and sit across from him
stop going out with him
wrap him in a tarp and toss him in the river, don't forget to add some bricks for weight
or get a divorce
see? you have lots of choices here...
as for how i feel about booth seating, i think i don't care where my partner is sitting as long as payment for the food isn't coming out of my purse, but, then again, I've not been with anybody for 20 years

If it's just the two of us then I'd say across. If we're with other people I'd want him next to me though.

My boyfriend always sits across from me for the same reason, and i used to get sad when we were first dating, but i like it better now. I agree with you, its much easier to face them =]
Maybe he does it just to get a rise out of you, who knows? =]

I find it easier to sit across from my wife. No problem with her. She agrees. We love each other and have been together for 23 years and are not really that touchy feely.
