I wanted to install Windows Vista on my pc, but when I tried it said that I needed to have a 40GB hard drive also upgrade on RAM. I have 256MB, but I need 512MB. Also is it easy to install? How would I go about doing it?

You can install it on an external drive so long as that drive is configured as the primary boot device in your PC's BIOS.

With all due respect .... why the heck are you trying to install Vista ?

My guess : a friend gave you a pirated copy ....
No worries. Many people do it.
BUT ....
I have legal copies of all Vista versions (as well as a PC with more power than Vista will ever need) & I have found NO advantage to using Vista whatsoever.

Anyways .... if your PC has only 256MB of RAM odds are that the rest of it wouldbe far better off keeping its distance from Vista ... for now anyways.

First in order to install Vista, you must first uninstall your common sense because mostly all computer professionals, including myself, recommend waiting at least 2 years until Windows finally gets most of the bugs out. Next, 512 is the MINIMUM for the HOME BASIC Vista, which is very limited and wont do much. You need a gig or more to really run Vista. You will also likely need a new video card, sound card, new applications, and new therapist because you will have driven the old one crazy asking, "Why, o, why, o, why did I ever install Vista?"
Best is to get kubuntu for free at www.kubuntu.org
