No. Windows XP has "memorized" the hardware configuration of the laptop, and trying to boot off of it on your desktop will at best not work, at worst corrupt your data.

first of all is your win 98 computer capable of running xp
the min specs are 233meg processor and 64meg ram but it'll run like a snail with that you really need a 500meg processor and 128meg ram
you can try to get windows xp running on you pc by making sure your laptop hard drive is set to master and the main hard drive is set to slave then put the connector that's in the original drive in to the laptop drive and the connector that was in the laptop drive into the original drive
you have a chance of it running xp now but you'll probably find that windows will want activating and that's the only thing that's going to stop you

No, you will be presented with the activation window to activate again, because windows will detect the hardware changes, that require you to activate all over again, now depending on if it has been activated before, you will be back heeled using the on line activation and may be even have to speak to a Microsoft adviser about activation, using their free phone automated service number, which if activation fails, you will have to hold to speak to an adviser and they will definitely ask if you are activating on the same PC, and basically you are not, only one licence is allowed per one computer, unless you have paid for a volume licence.

If you can get you bios to boot from the new hard drive you will have to have a XP disk and do a repair setup so the hard drive can get used to its new environment. Not the first "R", but the second. You will have to reactivate it also.

You must boot from your laptop hard drive. You can change boot order in the BIOS.
But, if you do this, then it may screw things up when you go back to the laptop with the drive.
